Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Arts in Art History Program
The Bachelor of Arts in Art History program at the University of Bern offers a comprehensive education in the field of art history, covering four study areas: Older Art History, Art History of the Modern Era, Art History of the Modern and Contemporary Period, and Architectural History and Heritage Conservation.
Program Structure
The program is divided into two phases: the propaedeutic phase (usually the first and second semesters) and the main study phase (usually the third to sixth semesters). The propaedeutic phase includes four basic modules in the study areas mentioned above, each consisting of a lecture, a basic course, and a proseminar. The main study phase includes four in-depth modules in the same study areas, each consisting of a lecture and a proseminar, as well as a main seminar that prepares students for the Bachelor's thesis and provides an insight into the Master's program.
Combination Options
The Bachelor's program consists of a major (120 ECTS credits) and one or more minors (60 ECTS credits). Students can choose from various minors offered by the University of Bern, except for the minor in the same field of study as the major. It is possible to combine the major with one minor (60 ECTS credits) or two minors (30 ECTS credits each).
Requirements
There are no specific prior knowledge requirements for the program. However, students must demonstrate proficiency in two modern foreign languages or Latin and one modern foreign language.
Admission
The admission requirements include a Swiss maturity certificate or a recognized international diploma. Students with an international diploma must apply for admission through the University's admission office.
Career Opportunities
The study of art history enables students to pursue a variety of careers. However, the job market is competitive, and students are advised to acquire practical experience and additional skills during their studies. Relevant areas of knowledge include IT, public relations, additional foreign languages, business and law, and pedagogy.
Further Studies
After completing the Bachelor's program, students can pursue a consecutive Master's program in fields such as Edition Philology, Art History, or World Arts and Music.
