Program Overview

Doctoral program in chemistry and molecular sciences

The Chemistry program leads us to the building blocks of life and matter, from the nano-level of atoms and molecules to macroscopic substances that make up the world around us. It takes us from the simplest molecules that developed into life billions of years ago to modern nanotechnology.

Program Description

The research project should lead to publications in scientific journals. Upon completion, the results will be summarized in a written dissertation and reviewed by international experts. The PhD offers the best career opportunities, thanks to the large number of chemical companies in Switzerland that constantly seek chemists with a PhD.

Basic information

  • Degree: PhD of Science in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, University of Bern (PhD)
  • Scope: 30 ECTS
  • Offer: Doctorate: Chemistry and Molecular Sciences
  • Duration of study: 3 - 4 years
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Start of studies: fall or spring semester

Legal basis

  • Curriculum for the subject of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences from March 10, 2016 with changes (PDF, 161KB)

Study content

In some cases, doctoral students may be required to attend additional lectures to acquire knowledge they did not already possess during their master's studies. Otherwise, attending lectures is not mandatory during the doctoral program.

Study structure

The study of chemistry and molecular sciences at the University of Bern is divided into:

  • Bachelor's degree (6 semesters, 180 ECTS, title: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences)
  • Master's degree (3 semesters, 90 ECTS, in English, title: Master of Sciences in Chemistry and Molecular Sciences)
  • PhD program (3 to 4 years, in English, title: PhD of Science in Chemistry and Molecular Science)

A doctoral thesis in chemistry and molecular sciences usually takes 3-4 years. The doctoral thesis consists of a specialized research project within a research group at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Pharmacy (DCBP) and leads to a written thesis and several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, which play an important role in future career prospects.

Deadlines

  • Semester dates
  • Application deadlines for doctoral students
  • Renewal of semester enrollment for the next semester
  • Matriculation requirement
  • Application for exmatriculation due to completion, interruption, or termination of studies

Requirements

To pursue a doctoral program at DCBP, you must have a Master of Science (MSc) degree and be accepted by a research group at DCBP. Please inform yourself about the individual research groups' websites regarding research topics and contact the corresponding professors directly.

Conclusion

Once you have fulfilled all the specific completion formalities, you can apply for the completion of your study program at the Dean's Office. A description of the completion process can be found here.

After the doctorate

Many graduates of a doctorate in chemistry decide to work as postdocs in a research group at a university or other research institutions for 1-2 years. With a doctoral degree, you can transition into industry or continue your academic career.

Advice guide

The University of Bern offers its members (students and employees) a wide range of counseling services. The counseling guide provides information on offers, counseling, and contact points at the university and possibilities for action.
