Introduction to the CAS Lean Healthcare Management MiG Program

The healthcare industry is undergoing a structural transformation, driven by technological advancements and the industrialization of care services. The CAS Lean Healthcare Management MiG program is designed to support healthcare professionals in navigating this change by providing a comprehensive understanding of Lean Management principles and their application in the healthcare context.

Program Overview

The CAS Lean Healthcare Management MiG program is a 12 ECTS points course that consists of six modules, each lasting between 1-3 days. The program is designed to be completed within one year, with a flexible schedule that allows participants to balance their work and study commitments. The program is taught in German and is SIWF-approved, with 25 credits available upon successful completion.

Program Objectives

The program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to:

• Understand the key elements of Lean Management in the healthcare context
• Introduce and implement Lean principles in their area of responsibility
• Set and prioritize goals, and drive change initiatives
• Analyze and solve operational and personnel problems in a methodical and timely manner
• Initiate a culture of continuous improvement, establish a data-driven feedback culture, and set measurable goals

Target Audience

The program is designed for individuals with several years of work experience and leadership experience in the healthcare sector, including those working in direct or indirect patient care, state administration, healthcare providers, insurance companies, educational institutions, industry, and professional organizations.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program requires a university degree and several years of work experience in the healthcare sector, as well as leadership experience. Exceptions to these requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis, and additional conditions may be imposed to ensure that participants can successfully complete the program.

Program Structure

The program consists of six modules, each covering a specific aspect of Lean Healthcare Management, including:

• Understanding the Lean Healthcare philosophy
• Identifying and analyzing problems, defining change projects, and analyzing strategic gaps
• Dealing with resistance and initiating change processes for innovation
• Practical work with Lean instruments to experience the management of continuous improvement processes
• Conducting a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to review change steps, implement countermeasures, and stabilize the target state

Faculty and Organization

The program is offered by the Center for Health Law and Management in the Healthcare Sector at the University of Bern, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Medicine. The program is taught by experienced faculty members from the University of Bern, as well as guest lecturers from other universities and industry experts.

Tuition Fees

The program tuition fee is CHF 11,520.
