Program Overview
Introduction to the CAS in Applied Data Science
The University of Bern offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) program in Applied Data Science. This program is designed to provide students and professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to extract insights and knowledge from data. The CAS in Applied Data Science is a 6-module program that can be completed within one or two years.
Program Structure
The CAS in Applied Data Science is structured into six modules, each focusing on a different aspect of data science. The program provides 16 ECTS credit points and requires a total workload of approximately 480 hours. The modules are designed to be flexible, allowing students to attend individual modules or complete the entire program.

- Module 1: Data Acquisition and Management
- Module 2: Statistical Inference for Data Science
- Module 3: Data Analysis and Machine Learning
- Module 4: Ethics and Best Practices
- Module 5: Peer Consulting and Selected Readings
- Module 6: Deep Learning
Objectives
Upon completion of the CAS in Applied Data Science program, graduates will be able to:
- Be familiar with different data sources, data types, and develop data management plans
- Describe, extract, and present scientific knowledge from data using statistical methods
- Process data with machine learning tools and methods
- Be familiar with best practices for data management, analytics, and science
- Analyze and communicate data science challenges and use a wide range of data science tools and methods
- Perform deep learning for a wide range of tasks
Admission
The CAS in Applied Data Science program is aimed at students and professionals from the public and private sectors who hold a degree from a university or a university of applied sciences. Registered participants will receive acceptance confirmation by email and will be invited to one of the next information events. Attendance at one information event is mandatory.
Application and Tuition Fees
The program fees for the CAS in Applied Data Science are CHF 9'900. Students currently enrolled in a university or university of applied sciences and employees of the University of Bern are eligible for a reduced fee of CHF 6'900. Payment in installments is possible.
