Program Overview

The Diplôme de formation continue (DAS) in Éducation Thérapeutique du Patient is a postgraduate program offered by the University of Geneva. This program aims to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to provide patient-centered care and education, enabling patients to manage their chronic conditions effectively.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this program are to:

• Aid patients with chronic conditions in acquiring the necessary skills to manage their disease and treatment
• Plan, implement, and evaluate research-action projects aimed at innovating in the field of patient education
• Foster a creative and innovative approach in the relationship between healthcare professionals and patients

Target Audience

This program is designed for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other specialists, who work in hospitals, clinics, or community health settings. It is also open to professionals from the socio-sanitary and human sciences sectors who have a practice in a health setting or are patient educators.

Competencies

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Understand the challenges related to developing patient education projects
• Mobilize and coordinate actors involved in patient education
• Accompany and train teams to develop their patient education programs
• Evaluate and improve patient education practices and programs

Program Structure

The DAS program consists of 8 modules, each focusing on a specific aspect of patient education, such as understanding the patient's needs, mobilizing and supporting the patient's motivation, and conceiving a patient education project. The program also includes a final thesis that relates to the analysis, conception, and implementation of an educational project in the participant's workplace.

Modules

The 8 modules are:

1. Comprendre le/la patient-e pour mieux situer ses besoins en éducation thérapeutique (Understanding the patient to better identify their needs in therapeutic education)
2. Mobiliser et soutenir la motivation du/de la patient-e ŕ commencer et ŕ poursuivre son projet déducation thérapeutique (Mobilizing and supporting the patient's motivation to start and continue their therapeutic education project)
3. Concevoir un projet déducation thérapeutique avec le/la patient-e ŕ partir de ses besoins (Conceiving a therapeutic education project with the patient based on their needs)
4. Utiliser les stratégies pédagogiques adaptées aux différents contextes éducatifs en individuel et en groupe (Using pedagogical strategies adapted to different educational contexts - individual and group)
5. Comprendre les enjeux relatifs au développement de projets déducation thérapeutique du patient (Understanding the challenges related to developing patient education projects)
6. Mobiliser et coordonner les acteurs de léducation thérapeutique du patient (Mobilizing and coordinating the actors involved in patient education)
7. Accompagner et former des équipes ŕ développer leurs programmes déducation thérapeutique du patient (Accompanying and training teams to develop their patient education programs)
8. Évaluer pour faire évoluer les pratiques et les programmes déducation thérapeutique du patient (Evaluating to improve patient education practices and programs)

Evaluation

Each module is evaluated through a written assignment. Participants must obtain a satisfactory mention for each module and for the final thesis to be awarded the DAS degree.

Teaching Methods

The modules are organized in an interactive manner, allowing participants to experiment with different pedagogical modalities. An active implication is required from the participants during the formation.

Direction and Coordination

The program is directed by Prof. Zoltan PATAKY and coordinated by Catherine JOLY.

Committee

The program has a scientific committee composed of experts in the field of patient education and healthcare.

Partnerships

The program has partnerships with several organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), and the University of Lausanne.
