Introduction to the Ph.D. in Econometrics

The Ph.D. in Econometrics is a rigorous graduate program designed for individuals interested in developing adequate tools for confronting economic hypotheses with real-life data and making proper inference for policymaking. This program allows candidates to acquire solid econometric, analytical, and empirical skills, as well as carry out innovative research at the cutting edge of econometrics in a stimulating academic environment.

Curriculum

A Ph.D. in Econometrics is awarded on the basis of a thesis in theoretical as well as applied econometrics, generally in the form of three scientific articles, evaluated by a jury composed of internal and external examiners. At least one of the three papers should be a methodological/theoretical one, preferably with an empirical illustration, and the others can be theoretical or applied with a strong methodological component.

Institute and University Background

The Ph.D. in Econometrics at the University of Geneva has a rich history, dating back to the creation of the Department of Econometrics in 1970. The first econometrics chair in Switzerland was established at the University of Geneva in 1966, attributed to Professor Luigi Solari, who later founded the Department of Econometrics. This department, along with the Department of Economics, has evolved into the Institute of Economics and Econometrics of the Geneva School of Economics and Management. The Institute organizes a public lecture, the Luigi Solari Lecture, in memory of its founder, which has been delivered by many distinguished econometricians, including Nobel Laureates.
