The Commodity Trading program is a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) offered by the University of Geneva. The program is designed to provide professionals with a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including trading transactions, risk management, and financing.
Program Overview
The CAS in Commodity Trading is a short version of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in Commodity Trading. The program was created to meet the growing international demand for online courses in commodity trading. The program is offered primarily online, with the exception of the first two modules, which require in-person attendance.

Module Descriptions
Trading Transactions
This module provides an overview of the entire process of generating a deal in commodity trading, including understanding costs, risks, and contract terms.
Risk Management
This module focuses on identifying, quantifying, and managing risks in commodity trading, including price risks and hedging techniques.
Shipping & Operations
This module covers the trading workflow, including contract setup, documentation, and logistics.
Data, Technology & Innovation
This module explores the role of data and technology in commodity trading, including data science, artificial intelligence, and digitalization.
Trade Finance Banking Instruments
This module provides an understanding of the main banking instruments used in trade finance, including letters of credit and guarantees.
Commodity Financing & Treasury
This module presents various financing methods available to commodity trading companies, including transactional trade finance, inventory financing, and borrowing base.
Commodity Trading Simulation
This module allows students to practice commodity trading in a simulated environment, including managing cash contracts, monitoring portfolios, and hedging.
Admission Criteria
- University degree: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree
- Professional experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
- English proficiency: Required for all applicants
Tuition Fees
- Application fee: CHF 250 (non-refundable)
- CAS tuition: CHF 8,500
- Individual modules: 1.5-ECTS module: CHF 900, 3-ECTS module: CHF 1,800 (conditions apply)
Assessment
Each module is subject to an assessment, including in-class exams, classroom presentations, and take-home assignments.
