Armenian Language and Literature

The University of Geneva is the only Swiss university with a center for Armenian studies and one of the few places in Europe where students can pursue a degree in ancient and modern Armenian language and literature from bachelor's to doctorate level.


  • The field of study is divided into two historical orientations, one ancient (5th-18th centuries) and one modern (19th-20th centuries)
  • The themes addressed give importance to historiography and the transmission of knowledge in ancient and medieval times, to the literature of the diaspora, and to the theme of identity in exile
  • Other topics include Soviet-era literature, apocryphal literature, the history of women, the roots of Armenian Christianity, and its relations with Greek, Syriac, and Latin Christianity
