Program Overview

Bachelor Universitaire en Relations Internationales (BARI)

The Bachelor Universitaire en Relations Internationales (BARI) is an interdisciplinary program offered by the Global Studies Institute (GSI) at the University of Geneva. This unique program in French-speaking Switzerland results from a collaboration between the GSI and its partner faculties: Law, Letters, Social Sciences, and Economics and Management.

Program Description

The BARI is a three-year program totaling 180 ECTS credits, with French as the primary language of instruction. Although some courses are taught in English, a good understanding of English is recommended. The program introduces students to various fields, including law, economics, history, political science, and global studies.

Program Structure

The BARI consists of two parts:

  • The first part corresponds to the first year (and potentially the second year in case of repetition) and totals 60 ECTS credits.
  • The second part corresponds to the second and third years (or potentially the fourth year) and totals 120 ECTS credits.

The program offers five orientations to choose from:

  • BARI, Orientation Droit
  • BARI, Orientation Economie internationale
  • BARI, Orientation Etudes globales
  • BARI, Orientation Histoire internationale
  • BARI, Orientation Politique internationale

Admission Criteria

Admission to the BARI is not guaranteed, even if the conditions for enrollment at the University of Geneva are met. The demand for admission will be accepted or refused according to the articles 6 and 7 of the BARI study regulations. For example, a candidate who has failed in economics, business management, law, history, political science, or international relations will not be admitted to the BARI.

Equivalences

Only equivalences related to identical teachings within the BARI and successfully passed (with a minimum grade of 4.00 or "Yes") within the GSI's partner faculties are granted. The partner faculties of the University of Geneva involved in the BARI are the faculties of law, letters, social sciences, and economics and management.

Duration and Credits

The normal duration of the program is three years, with a maximum of four years. The program director may grant exceptions to the duration of studies based on justifiable reasons. Each year is equivalent to 60 ECTS credits, with one credit corresponding to 25-30 hours of student work.

Teaching Locations

Most teachings take place at Uni Mail, Uni Dufour, and Uni Bastions.

Student Enrollment

Over 1030 students were enrolled in the BARI in the autumn of 2025 (first and second parts).

Mobility

A mobility stay is possible exclusively for students in the second part of the program, limited to one semester in the third or fourth year. The panorama of exchange destinations is available on the website of the University of Geneva's Academic Mobility Service.

Academic Advising

For questions about the program, students can contact Mr. Marc Pochon, Academic Advisor of the GSI.
