Program Overview


Confucius China Studies Program

The Confucius China Studies Program is designed to support doctoral students from foreign universities to come to China for study, research, and writing of their doctoral dissertations.


Joint Research PhD Fellowship

The Joint Research PhD Fellowship is a key component of the Confucius China Studies Program. The fellowship aims to provide opportunities for doctoral students to conduct research in China and enhance their understanding of Chinese culture and society.


Purpose

The purpose of the Joint Research PhD Fellowship is to support doctoral students registered with foreign universities to come to China for study, research, and writing of their doctoral dissertations.


Duration

The duration of the fellowship is from six months to two years.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must:


  • Be non-Chinese citizens
  • Have an HSK test score level 3 or higher, with priority given to applicants with higher levels of proficiency in Chinese
  • Not be currently participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship program

Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following materials:


  • Ph.D. study certificate
  • Two letters of recommendation from scholars in related fields
  • HSK transcript
  • Abstract of master's thesis or other academic publications
  • Abstract of doctoral dissertation
  • A research plan for the study in China
    • Priority is given to applicants who obtain a letter of recommendation from local Confucius Institutes

How to Apply

Applicants must submit an online application and then post the application form and other supporting documents to the Confucius Institute Headquarters.


Assessment Process

The Confucius China Studies Program Expert Committee will review the application materials and conduct a video interview.


Funding

The fellowship provides the following funding:


  • Lodging and living stipend: 80,000 RMB per year
  • Research fund: 20,000 RMB per year
  • Round-trip international airfare
  • Tuition
  • Other support provided by the host Chinese university
  • Expenses for the foreign supervisor's visit or research in China
  • Expenses for life and medical insurances in China
  • Group activities and cultural experience
