Program Overview

Confucius China Studies Program

The Confucius China Studies Program is designed to support foreign students in pursuing full-time Ph.D. degrees in the humanities and social sciences at Chinese universities.


PhD in China Fellowship

The PhD in China Fellowship is a component of the Confucius China Studies Program, aiming to provide financial support to international students pursuing doctoral studies in China.


Purpose

The purpose of the PhD in China Fellowship is to support foreign students in pursuing full-time Ph.D. degrees in the humanities and social sciences at Chinese universities.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the PhD in China Fellowship, applicants must:


  • Be non-Chinese citizens
  • Have an HSK test score of level 5 or higher, with priority given to applicants with higher levels of proficiency in Chinese
  • Not be currently participating in the Chinese Government Scholarship program

Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following materials:


  • Recognized transcripts of undergraduate and graduate studies, diplomas, and copies of all documents in Chinese
  • HSK transcript
  • Abstract of master's thesis and other academic publications
  • A doctoral research statement
  • Two letters of recommendation from scholars in related fields
    • Priority is given to applicants who obtain a letter of recommendation from Confucius Institutes

Assessment Process

The Confucius China Studies Program Expert Committee will review application materials and conduct video interviews to assess applicants.


Funding

The PhD in China Fellowship provides the following funding:


  • Lodging and living stipend: 80,000 RMB per year
  • Research fund: 20,000 RMB per year
  • Round-trip international airfare
  • Tuition
  • Other support provided by the host Chinese university
  • Expenses for life and medical insurances in China
  • Group activities and cultural experience
