Huarahi Mori Program
The Huarahi Mori program is a specialist Bachelor of Education that qualifies students to be Mori-medium teachers or teachers of te reo at primary and intermediate levels.
Subject Overview
The three-year Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Mori specialisation develops students' understanding of education and familiarises them with the Mori-medium curriculum, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. It enhances students' knowledge and skills in the areas of:
- te reo matatini (literacy)
- pngarau (numeracy)
- tikanga Mori
- mtauranga Mori
- Mori pedagogy
- second language acquisition and pedagogy
Students gain first-hand experience of teaching by applying their learning in Mori-medium, bilingual, and mainstream classrooms during noho kura (practicum). Learning takes place in a supportive whnau environment, with Te Korowai Atawhai Mori academic support service available.

The Huarahi Mori program qualifies students to teach in Mori-medium, bilingual, and mainstream primary and intermediate schools. It can also lead to careers in:
- school management
- curriculum development
- working with iwi and community groups
TeachNZ Scholarships
A TeachNZ Scholarship can support students' teaching journey by covering their fees and paying an allowance while they study. There are two scholarships available for those studying a Mori-medium teaching qualification, including the Huarahi Mori specialisation:
- Te Tipu Whakarito scholarship: for anyone studying to teach te reo Mori or in Mori-medium settings, covering course fees plus $10,000 per annum for each year of study
- Te Waka Whakarei Career Changer scholarship: for career changers wanting to teach te reo Mori or in Mori-medium settings, covering course fees plus $30,000 per annum for each year of study
