Introduction to the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Conjoint BA/BE(Hons)

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Conjoint BA/BE(Hons) is a five-year programme that blends theoretical and practical work, allowing students to develop a broad range of skills and critical thinking abilities essential for solving complex problems.


Programme Overview

The BA/BE(Hons) programme enables students to combine one of nine engineering specialisations with a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, cultures, and languages. This conjoint programme requires 690 points, which is a reduction in the total required for two separate degrees.


Programme Structure

  • 420 points from the BE(Hons)
  • 255 points from Arts courses
  • 15 points General Education

The first year of the Engineering programme includes a set of compulsory courses, and students will choose either one or two BA subjects as their major(s). They will take eight courses (120 points) in each major, including at least three courses (45 points) at Stage III in each major.

Entry Requirements

New Zealand Secondary School Qualifications

To enter the programme, students must meet the University Entrance (UE) standard and the rank score for this programme. They may also need to have studied certain subjects or achieved credits in particular subjects.


Guaranteed Rank Score, Subject, and Other Requirements

  • NCEA: 265 with 17 external Level 3 credits in Calculus and 16 external Level 3 credits in Physics
  • CIE: 320 with Mathematics and Physics at A Levels
  • IB: 34 with Mathematics and Physics at HL Levels

Tertiary Qualifications

Students can transfer from another tertiary institution if they meet the requirements, including a minimum GPA or GPE of 5.0.


Other Pathways to Study

Alternative pathways include the Undergraduate Targeted Admission Scheme (UTAS), preparation and foundation programmes, and discretionary entrance for students under 20.

  • Domestic students: NZ$11,427.68*
  • International students: NZ$65,260*

Fees are inclusive of 15% GST but do not include the Student Services Fee, course books, travel, and health insurance, or living costs.
