Introduction to the Bachelor of Global Studies / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Conjoint

The Bachelor of Global Studies / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Conjoint is a comprehensive undergraduate program that combines the study of global issues with a deep understanding of law. This conjoint degree allows students to complete a Bachelor of Global Studies and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) in less time than it would take to complete the two degrees separately.

Programme Overview

The BGlobalSt/LLB(Hons) conjoint is an interdisciplinary program that exposes students to new ways of thinking about the world, develops their competence in another language, and grows their understanding of other cultures and perspectives. Students who achieve a B+ average or higher across all their Law courses at the completion of LLB Part II will be invited to transfer to the LLB(Hons) program.

Programme Structure

The BGlobalSt/LLB(Hons) conjoint usually takes five and a half years to complete, consisting of:

• 255 points from BGlobalSt courses
• 465 points from LLB courses
• 15 points from a General Education course
• 15 points from a Waipapa Taumata Rau core course

In the first year, students must complete three Stage I core LLB courses and four Stage I courses from the BGlobalSt, including the Waipapa Taumata Rau core course. Students will continue to take a mix of Law courses and Global Studies courses in each subsequent year.

Majors

Students will choose from one of four majors for the BGlobalSt component of their conjoint:

• Global Environment and Sustainable Development
• Global Politics and Human Rights
• International Relations and Business
• Transnational Cultures and Creative Practice

Entry Requirements

Entry to the program is by invitation for high-achieving LLB Part II students. To be considered for the honours program, students must achieve a B+ average or higher across all their Law courses at the completion of LLB Part II.

Fees

The annual tuition fees for the program are:

• NZ$8,328 for domestic students
• NZ$52,148 for international students

Key Dates

The application closing date for Semester One 2026 is 8 December 2025. The start date for the program is 2 March 2026.

Planning Your Degree

To complete the BGlobalSt, students need to take core courses, a major, a language, area studies, General Education, and elective courses. Students must plan carefully to ensure they complete all elements of the degree.

Year One

In the first year, students must take the Stage I core course: GLOBAL 102: Introduction to Global Studies. Students should also take up to three Stage I courses for their chosen major.

Beyond Year One

To complete the BGlobalSt, students need to take the core courses GLOBAL 200 and GLOBAL 300. Students must consider the timing of these courses, as there is a relationship between them. GLOBAL 200 should be taken in the second-to-last year of the conjoint, and GLOBAL 300 should be taken in the final year.

A BGlobalSt/LLB(Hons) prepares students for a range of exciting careers, including international law, politics and government, the environmental sector, international development, foreign affairs, trade, or the creative industries.
