About Program
Program Overview
Introduction to the Communication Internship Programme
The Communication internship programme is designed for third-year BA and BC students, providing an opportunity to gain real-world workplace experience as part of their degrees. This programme allows students to complete an internship in the workplace, taking on a set project for the organisation and completing accompanying university coursework.
Programme Structure
- The programme operates as a standard, 15-point course.
- It is a valuable opportunity to gain workplace experience, make connections, and develop professional skills.
- Students will complete an 80-hour, supervised project in the workplace.
- Additionally, students will complete 1012 hours of coursework, which includes in-person sessions in weeks 1-3 and Zoom sessions in weeks 6, 10, and 11.
How the Programme Works
- The programme is worth one 15-point course at Stage III, credited as COMMS 307 for Communication students.
- Internship projects come from a range of industries, including media, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, and corporate communication, NGOs, and charities.
- Enrolment numbers are limited, and not every student will be accepted.
Application Process
Applying
- Find an internship of interest, either by browsing available projects or by reaching out to organisations directly.
- If organising a project independently, download and send the potential supervisor/mentor the one-page course brief, along with an introductory email explaining why the project is of interest and what skills are being offered.
- Prepare a CV specific to the chosen opportunity, which must be reviewed before submission.
- Complete the online application, including submitting the CV.
- An example CV is provided for reference, and feedback will be given on the CV before it is sent to the organisation.
If the Application is Accepted
- The student will be invited to a pre-course session, where they will deliver a 2-minute pitch for their chosen project.
- After completing the session and upon the course coordinators' approval of the pitch and CV, the application will be sent to the organisation.
- The organisation will arrange an interview with the student.
- If the interview is successful, the student will be formally enrolled in COMMS 307.
Benefits of the Programme
- Gain a range of new skills to boost employability and enhance the CV.
- Obtain real-life workplace experience in the area of interest.
- Build connections and develop a network of professional contacts.
- Receive references for future job applications.
- Develop a portfolio of work, such as pieces of writing, videos produced, or social media campaigns.
- Receive feedback and practice around CV-writing and interview skills.
- Possibility of employment (part-time or full-time) with the chosen organisation.
Who the Programme Works With
The programme works with a variety of organisations across different industries, offering students a diverse range of internship opportunities. Students can browse current projects available or seek out their own opportunities that could be credited towards the course.
