Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a broad foundation in engineering principles and practices. The degree is structured to ensure that students gain a deep understanding of engineering fundamentals, as well as the skills and knowledge required to succeed in their chosen specialization.
Part I: The Common Year
Part I of the BE(Hons) is a common core year, where students undertake a similar curriculum designed to expose them to all nine specializations. The common year is purpose-built to ensure the quality of the degree and to help assess students' capabilities, providing appropriate support where necessary.
Semester One
- ENGGEN 121 - Engineering Mechanics (15 points)
- ENGSCI 111 - Mathematical Modelling 1 (15 points)
- WTRENG 100 - Waipapa Taumata Rau course (15 points)
- General Education course* (15 points)
Semester Two
- CHEMMAT 121 - Materials Science (15 points)
- ELECTENG 101 - Electrical and Digital Systems (15 points)
- ENGGEN 115 - Principles of Engineering Design (15 points)
- ENGGEN 131 - Engineering Computation and Software Development (15 points)
Additional Requirements
- ENGGEN 199 - English Language Competency (no credit)
- ACADINT A01 - Academic Integrity Course (no credit)
Academic Integrity Course
All new undergraduate and postgraduate students must complete the Academic Integrity course in their first year. This online course introduces the University's rules on academic conduct, covering topics such as copyright, plagiarism, and the consequences of academic dishonesty.
English Language Competency
The English Language Competency course is compulsory for all students, including native speakers and those for whom English is a second language. The course involves a 30-minute Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment (DELNA) screening, which must be completed early in the first semester.
Waipapa Taumata Rau Course
The Waipapa Taumata Rau course is a distinctive feature of the University's degree, designed to broaden students' education. It aims to help students transition into university life, providing knowledge vital to their studies and essential skills such as critical and ethical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to work well with others.
Beyond the First Year
The BE(Hons) contains two major practical elements underpinned by engineering theory. In addition to pursuing their specialization and elective courses, students will also complete essential practical components, including:
- ENGGEN 299 - Workshop Practice
- ENGGEN 499 - Practical Work
