Master of Public Policy (Online)

The Master of Public Policy (Online) is designed to prepare students to lead in public policy analysis and make impactful contributions to important issues. This program teaches the theoretical and practical skills to develop effective public policy that solves challenging, real-world problems.


Program Overview

The online Master of Public Policy program is for those who want to further develop their knowledge of public policy. During this degree, students will learn how to connect theory with practice by studying the nature of policy, policy design, and policy process through a set of courses, which includes an externship designed to facilitate work-integrated learning, as well as independent research.


Entry Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant subject
  • A GPA/GPE of 5.0
  • Pathways are available for those who do not meet the entry criteria

Programme Structure

The MPP consists of 6 courses that total 180 points. Each course runs over a 15-week semester, allowing students to study two courses a year, one course at a time, and complete the full program in three years.


Core Courses

  • POLICY 740 - Policy Design, Analysis and Implementation - 30 Points
    • Provides a critical overview of the policy process including problem definition, co-design, as well as focusing on a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to policy analysis.
  • POLICY 741 - Government and Policy: New Zealand Compared - 30 points
    • An examination of the composition, functions, and rules associated with New Zealands machinery of government at both central and local level.
  • POLICY 742 - Statistics and Data Analysis for Policy - 30 points
    • Provides an advanced introduction to statistical analysis and examines the use of different types of data used in evidence-based policy making.
  • POLICY 743 - Economics, Budgets and Bureaucrats - 30 points
    • Applies key concepts and tools of economic analysis to contemporary policy problems.

Option 1: Applied Track

  • POLICY 745 - Policy Research, Evaluation and Practice - 30 points
    • Expands a students understanding of policy evaluation and research and provides a practical opportunity to apply course learning to policy advocacy, analysis, research, and/or evaluation.
  • POLICY 796 - Research Project - 30 points
    • This course allows a student to develop an independent research project that applies policy concepts, theories, and frameworks to a policy topic.

Option 2: Dissertation

  • POLICY 795 Dissertation - 60 points
    • Develops students ability to design and undertake a policy-related research project under supervision and to present a written report of 15,000-20,000 words.
