Program Overview

Bachelor of Science (BSc) majoring in Biological Sciences

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) majoring in Biological Sciences is a comprehensive program that offers students a wide range of options to tailor their studies to their interests. The program consists of courses worth 15 points each, totaling 360 points.

Programme Structure

Students must complete the following courses plus a capstone course in their final year of study. The capstone course is a student-led project where students integrate and apply their learning to a real-world problem in their chosen major or specialization. For Biological Sciences, the recommended capstone course is BIOSCI 399, which allows students to debate contemporary issues in biology and explore how these issues are interpreted from a cultural, political, and economic perspective.

Biological Sciences Pathways

As a Biological Sciences student, you will take common core courses in each year of study. You can choose to keep your Biological Sciences major general or follow one or more of the following pathways:

  • Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • Biotechnology
  • Ecology
  • Evolution
  • Genetics
  • Marine Biology
  • Microbiology
  • Plant Biology
  • Zoology

Doing a Double Major with Biological Sciences

If you choose to do a double major in your BSc, the following subjects are recommended to complement Biological Sciences:

  • Anthropological Science
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Earth Sciences
  • Environmental Science
  • Exercise Sciences
  • Geography
  • Psychology
  • Statistics

Preparing for Your Biological Sciences Major

Some students may feel more prepared for Biological Sciences courses if they have already studied some science subjects in high school. The subject guide for school students provides information on which school subjects will help you feel prepared.

Help and Advice

The Student Hubs are available to provide help and advice on any aspect of your studies and life at the university. The hubs are open seven days a week at the City, Grafton, and Tai Tonga campuses and six days a week at Tai Tokerau, with friendly staff available to provide advice.
