Introduction to the University of Auckland Law Program

Compulsory Courses for LLB Part I

All Bachelor of Laws (LLB) students must complete a series of compulsory courses across Parts IIV of the degree. The core courses for LLB Part I include:


  • LAW 121G: Law and Society (15 points, offered in Semester One and Semester Two)
  • LAW 131: Legal Method (15 points, offered in Semester Two only)
  • LAW 141: Legal Foundations (15 points, offered in Semester Two only)

Teaching Format for LLB Part I

The teaching format for these courses includes:


  • LAW 121G: Three one-hour lectures per week and a one-hour clinic every fortnight
  • LAW 131 and LAW 141: Three one-hour lectures per week and a one-hour tutorial every fortnight

Compulsory Courses for LLB Part II

The compulsory courses for LLB Part II include:


  • LAW 201: Criminal Law (30 points)
  • LAW 211: Public Law (30 points)
  • LAW 231: Law of Torts (30 points)
  • LAW 241: Law of Contract (30 points)
  • LAW 297: Legal Research, Writing and Communication (10 points)

Teaching Format for LLB Part II

The teaching format for these courses includes:


  • LAW 201: One two-hour lecture per week, two-hour workshops (four rounds), and one-hour tutorials every fortnight (six tutorial rounds)
  • LAW 211 and LAW 241: One one-hour and one two-hour lecture per week, plus a one-hour tutorial every fortnight (eight tutorial rounds)
  • LAW 231: One one-hour and one two-hour lecture per week, one-hour tutorials (two rounds in Semester One), and two-hour workshops (four rounds throughout the year)
  • LAW 297: One compulsory two-hour workshop every fortnight (twelve rounds)

Compulsory Courses for LLB Part III

As part of the Universitys shift to 15-point courses, the following 2026 courses will have updated points and new codes:


  • LAW 304: Equity (replacing LAW 306AB, 20 points, offered in Semester One only)
  • LAW 305: Land Law (replacing LAW 301AB, 20 points, offered in Semester One only)
  • LAW 316: Jurisprudence (15 points, offered in Semester One and Semester Two)

Teaching Format for LLB Part III

The teaching format for these courses includes:


  • LAW 304 and LAW 305: One one-hour and one two-hour lecture per week, plus one-hour sessions every fortnight (six tutorial rounds for LAW 304 and six workshop rounds for LAW 305)
  • LAW 316: One one-hour and one two-hour lecture per week, plus one-hour tutorials every fortnight (four rounds)

Compulsory Courses for LLB Part IV

The compulsory course for LLB Part IV includes:


  • LAW 498: Advanced Legal Research, Writing and Communication (0 points)

Requirements for LAW 498

Students enrol for LAW 498 in their final term of LLB Part IV. LAW 498 requires students to undertake research, participate in a moot, and complete a written assignment with requirements able to be met prior to enrolment.
