Program Overview


Postgraduate Research in Marketing

The Hull University Business School offers a PhD in Marketing, providing an inspirational environment for researchers. The dynamic team of research-oriented academics has expertise in key areas within marketing, including electronic and mobile marketing, social media, services marketing, ethical and social marketing, SMEs and B2B marketing, brand management, corporate social responsibility, relationship marketing, and advertising.


About the Programme

The PhD in Marketing requires a student to complete the equivalent of 540 credits of research, including both research specialist modules and research thesis preparation. Students will be closely supported and given opportunities to travel and attend conferences. On-campus facilities are excellent, with PhD candidates having exclusive access to the Postgraduate Lounge in the Brynmor Jones Library.

Programme Structure

The PhD programme is available full-time or part-time. The full-time programme typically lasts three years, with up to 12 months of writing up if required. The part-time programme typically lasts six years, with up to 24 months of writing up if required.

Writing Up and Thesis Submission

A standard full-time PhD programme includes three years of research plus up to 12 months of thesis finalisation. For part-time students, this period is six years plus up to 24 months of thesis finalisation if needed. The thesis finalisation phase should take three months for full-time students and six months for part-time students but may be extended.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the PhD in Marketing, applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a related discipline appropriate to their intended research.


Fees and Funding

The standard course fee for the PhD in Marketing is 」5,006 per year for full-time study and 」2,503 per year for part-time study. UK students may be eligible for a Doctoral Loan to help with tuition fees and living costs.
