Program Overview
Postgraduate Research in Criminology
The University of Hull offers a vibrant and supportive research community in Criminology, covering a wide range of specialisms. Our research students are key participants in our scholarly community and play an active role in fostering academic debate and developments in our fields of study.
About Our Criminology Research Degrees
Our research degrees in Criminology provide opportunities for students to work alongside leading researchers in the field. We offer a full range of research training opportunities within the School and through the Universitys Postgraduate Training Scheme. The School also offers a limited number of partial bursaries for which research students can apply for funding to attend and host workshops and conferences.
Research Topics
Criminological research at the University of Hull has built on our strengths in evaluative criminal justice and penological research while developing an increasing focus on the research questions posed by new forms of surveillance, terrorism, information and communication technologies, and the transnational agenda in criminology. Staff specialisms include:
- The links between alcohol and violence
- The history of crime and punishment
- Surveillance
- Green crime
- Restorative justice
Programme Structure
Our PhD programme in Criminology is available full-time or part-time. The full-time programme typically lasts three years, with up to 12 months of writing up if required. The part-time programme typically lasts six years, with up to 24 months of writing up if needed.
PhD Structure
- Full-time: 3 years of research, with up to 12 months writing up if required
- Part-time: 6 years of research, with up to 24 months writing up if required
Writing Up and Thesis Submission
The thesis finalisation phase should take three months for full-time students but may be extended to one year without further paperwork. For part-time students, thesis finalisation should take six months, but may be extended to two years without further paperwork.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for our PhD programme in Criminology, you should normally have, or expect to obtain, at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in a related discipline appropriate to your intended research.
Fees and Funding
Our standard course fee for the 2026 entry has not been confirmed, but please use the following information as a guide:
- Full-time tuition fee: Ł5,006 per year
- Part-time tuition fee: Ł2,503 per year
- Writing-up period fees apply
UK students who havent secured a scholarship can take out a Doctoral Loan to help with tuition fees and living costs. The loan provides up to Ł30,301 for full-time and part-time PhDs in all subject areas.
Research Facilities and Support
All of our research students have access to desk space, computers, and other facilities in the school and through the Doctoral College. We have an excellent track record in seeing our students through to successful completion, and our students have gone on to rewarding careers both within and outside of academia.
