Program Overview
Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing
This module enables qualified registered nurses to train as community practitioner nurse prescribers, equipping them to prescribe safely from the Nurse Prescribers Formulary for patients in their care.
About the Course
The course is designed for suitably qualified registered nurses who meet the standards laid down by the Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC). Successful completion of this programme will enable them to prescribe for the patients they currently work with and prescribe from Nurse Prescribers Formulary for Community Practitioners.
Entry Requirements
- Current nurse registration on the NMC Professional Register as a registered nurse
- Intention to practice in an area of clinical need for which prescribing from the community practitioner formulary will improve patient/client care and service delivery
- Practiced for a sufficient period (minimum two years) to be deemed competent by the employer in the area intended to practice in
- Hold appropriate qualifications/ability to study at level 6 (degree level)
- Notification of successful completion of the prescribing qualification will be undertaken by the University
- The registrant must record their qualification with the NMC within 12 months of qualification
- The registrant must receive confirmation from the NMC that their qualification has been recorded on the NMC register prior to prescribing as a community practitioner nurse prescriber

- Written confirmation from the employer that there is employer support for the student to undertake the programme
- Clinical need within their role to justify prescribing
- Agreement to provide support to undertake the programme
- Assessed as competent to take a thorough history, undertake a clinical assessment, diagnose in area of specialty
- Demonstrate sufficient knowledge to apply principles of prescribing to own area and field of practice
- Demonstrate appropriate numeracy skills
- In accordance with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA 2018), all prescribing students require a nominated Practice Assessor and Named Practice Supervisor to support them throughout the module

- Level 6: Ł1,589 (per 20 credit module)
- Level 7: Ł1,461 (per 20 credit module)
