The Canadian Law Program at the University of Ottawa offers a unique opportunity for students to earn two degrees, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Licence en droit (LL.L.), in a three-year program. This program is designed to prepare students for the practice of law in Canada and abroad.
Program Overview
The program is offered in French only, but a knowledge of English is necessary. The Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has been training lawyers in both civil and common law for over 50 years, and is committed to reflecting the linguistic and legal diversity of Canada.

Program Notes
- The course CML 1506 is offered in January only, as an intensive course over 3 weeks.
- The courses CML 2704 and CML 2713 must be completed by the end of the second year.
- Among the optional courses, a minimum of 18 credits of courses must be completed in civil law (DRC) and a minimum of 15 credits of courses must be completed in common law (CML).
- Students in the Canadian Law Program must satisfy the tribunal-school requirement of the Common Law Section, which is met by completing the courses DRC 4797 and DRC 4798.
- Students in the Canadian Law Program must also satisfy the research paper requirement of the Common Law Section.
- Given the mission of the Canadian Law Program, a legal education in Canada would not be complete without the study of Indigenous legal traditions, which offer a different approach to legal issues and will enrich the program of study. In addition to the course CML 1707, 3 credits of optional courses in Indigenous law must be completed.
