Program Overview


Doctorate in Philosophy Nursing Sciences

Program Description

The goal of the Doctor of Nursing program is to prepare scientists capable of conducting innovative research that will make a significant contribution to nursing knowledge. Students demonstrate creative sense, critical thinking and synthesis in carrying out work relating to their field of interest, while using various philosophical, theoretical and methodological approaches.


Admission Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing or a related discipline and have a minimum average of 75% (B+).
  • Be a registered nurse in Canada or have equivalent qualifications in another country.
  • People who do not have a master's degree in nursing and/or who have deficiencies in statistics or research methodology will have to take propaedeutics courses.
  • Identify at least one faculty member willing to direct your research and thesis.

Linguistic Requirements

Applicants must understand and speak fluently the language of instruction, either French or English, of the chosen program. Proof of language proficiency may be required.

Program Structure

  • The doctoral program includes three fields:
    • Evidence-based decision making in nursing and health care.
    • Sociopolitical, educational and historical contexts of nursing sciences.
    • Nursing practice and health care delivery systems.
  • The program is offered full-time and normally lasts 12 terms (48 consecutive months) for full-time students.

Mandatory Courses

  • NSG 7500: Philosophical and theoretical perspectives in nursing sciences.
  • 6 course credits from a defined list, including courses on qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • NSG 7510: Doctoral seminar.
  • NSG 9997: Thesis proposal.
  • THD 9999: Doctoral thesis.
