Introduction to the Master's Program in Theatre Practice with Specialization in Directing
The Department of Theatre offers a Master's program in Theatre Practice (M.P.T.) with a specialization in Directing. This program focuses on the practice of directing for contemporary theatre, allowing students to develop their knowledge and skills in the art of directing.
Program Overview
The Master's program in Theatre Practice is a two-year, full-time program that can be taken in either English or French. The program is designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to study Anglophone and Francophone theatre practices in a bilingual and bicultural environment. The goal of the program is to train students for a career as a professional theatre director.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, students must have a Bachelor's degree in Theatre or an equivalent degree with a minimum average of 75% (B+) in the last two years of study and an overall average of at least 70% (B). Students must also demonstrate a good understanding of dramatic literature, theatre history, and theory, as well as sufficient knowledge of theatre production and administration. Additionally, students must have experience and talent in theatre directing, as well as practical experience in the theatre industry outside of an academic setting. Proficiency in one of the two official languages and a passive understanding of the other language are also required.

The program consists of 39 credits, including two required courses, production courses, seminars, and a practicum. The required courses are:

Minimum Requirements
The passing grade for all courses is C+. Students who fail two courses (equivalent to 6 credits) must withdraw from the program.

The program is designed to be completed in two years (five full-time terms).

Thesis Proposal and Research Paper
Students must enroll in THE 6990: Thesis Proposal and complete it by the end of the third session. They must also prepare a research paper under the direction of their supervisor and have it approved by the graduate committee. The research paper must be completed by the end of the third session of full-time registration in the master's program.
