Program Overview
Introduction to the Maîtrise čs arts Musique Program
The School of Music offers the degrees of Master of Music (M.Mus.) and Master of Arts (M.A.) in Music. Students can concentrate on performance (M.Mus.), composition (M.Mus.), or music research (M.A.).
Program Overview
The M.Mus. is offered in piano, collaborative piano, orchestral conducting, voice, orchestral instruments, and guitar. The School of Music also participates in interdisciplinary programs in Women's Studies and Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the master's level (M.A. only). Additionally, the School offers two graduate diplomas: one in piano pedagogy research and the other in performance.
Program Structure
The summer term (May to August) of the first year of study for this program is considered a scheduled break by the University. Students must resume their studies as of September. The programs are governed by the academic regulations in effect for graduate studies.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible, applicants must hold one of the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Music
- Specialized Bachelor of Music
- Four-year Bachelor's degree with a major in Music
- Any other diploma or certificate deemed equivalent
The minimum average required for admission is 75% (B+). If the degree is from a conservatory, it is considered equivalent if indicated on the transcript or if the coursework is equivalent to a four-year Bachelor's degree, including the equivalent of 6 credits in music history and 6 credits in music theory. Furthermore, performing applicants must pass an audition; applicants to the musicology or theory option must submit a portfolio of written work in the area of music history, analysis, or theory, depending on the option chosen (Musicology or Theory). Applicants may be required to pass placement tests in music history, theory, or solfege. Those who do not achieve satisfactory results must remedy their deficiencies during the first year of the program.

Applicants to the M.A. with a thesis must complete 24 credits of coursework, including 3 credits of required coursework, 15 credits of elective coursework, and write a thesis equivalent to 6 credits.

Program Duration
It is expected that full-time students will complete all requirements within a period of two years. The maximum time allowed is four years from the initial date of enrollment in the program.
Minimum Requirements
The passing grade in all courses is C+. Students who fail two courses (equivalent to 6 credits) must withdraw from the program.

Themes being studied will include the cognitive factors related to the skills involved in reading music; the control of expressive aspects of playing; the role of practicing in mastering the technical movements; the skills related to an ear training approach versus a note-reading approach; the aural, visual, and tactile memory skills involved in memorizing music.

Themes being studied will include a subject's conditioned responses to complex musical stimuli in the context of learning to play the piano; in-depth understanding of the research evaluating the effectiveness and relevance of already established piano methods; study of the motor skills involved in developing piano technique; health issues involved in the injuries related to piano playing.
