Program Overview

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Arts in Communication is a 4-year, 120-credit program that allows students to explore the rich field of communication. Throughout their studies, students will examine the effects of media on daily life and how communication functions within enterprises and organizations. By the end of their studies, students will have acquired useful skills for working in a business environment or pursuing further education.

Program Structure

The program includes a sequence of courses, a stage (CMN 3916), and the option to choose one of four contemporary and stimulating options.

Options

  • Option 1: Media and Cultural Industries The courses in this profile approach communication from a critical, social, and cultural perspective, focusing on the conditions under which media content, art, and popular culture are produced, conveyed, and consumed. Strategic partnerships with local media outlets enable students to work and volunteer in the media field.
  • Option 2: Political Communication This profile explores the links between communication, power, and democracy, covering social, cultural, economic, technological, and regulatory contexts in which communication organizations and individuals produce and exchange messages, exert influence, inform decision-making, and influence social change. Given the university's location in the national capital, students of political communication benefit from numerous employment and volunteer opportunities on Parliament Hill and in the federal government.
  • Option 3: Communication, Organizations, and Organizing Processes Discover all aspects of communication in the context of organizations. Courses focus on communication processes and relationships that shape the entirety of organizations, workplaces, and small groups, from public institutions and universities to social movements and charities. During their studies, several students work or volunteer for local businesses, startups, or non-profit organizations.
  • Option 4: Strategic Communication and Digital Design This profile provides the theoretical, critical, and practical skills necessary to understand the digital communication environment and contribute to it. It aims to strengthen the ability to analyze, conceptualize, and create strategies and content for diverse audiences. Due to the considerable demand for these skills in the job market, several communication program students volunteer and work in strategic communication with local, national, or international organizations, including hospitals, sports organizations, non-profits, and social service providers.
