Program Overview
Graduate Diploma Information Management
The School of Information Studies, located in the Faculty of Arts, offers a graduate diploma in Information Management and a Master of Information Studies (MIS). The graduate diploma program is intended for those who have recently completed an undergraduate degree and wish to enter a career in the field of records and information management, as well as for those already working in the field who wish to upgrade their qualifications.
Program Overview
Students in the program complete one compulsory course before taking an additional five elective courses to fulfill the 18 course units for the graduate diploma. This program is open to graduates in all disciplines and is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The program is governed by the academic regulations in effect for graduate studies.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the graduate programs in Information Studies is governed by the general regulations in effect for graduate studies. Applicants to the graduate diploma program must have a four-year bachelor's degree and a minimum cumulative average of 70% calculated in accordance with graduate studies guidelines. All applicants must be able to understand, speak, and write proficiently in either English or French and have a passive knowledge of the other language. Applicants whose first language is neither English nor French must provide proof of proficiency in one or the other.
Transfer from Graduate Diploma to Masters
Students enrolled in the graduate diploma program can request to transfer to the Master of Information Studies (MIS) in accordance with the General Regulations in effect for graduate studies.
Course Requirements
The Graduate Diploma program requires the completion of six ISI courses (18 course units). Prerequisites for the selected courses will be waived. Up to three units of relevant courses from other graduate programs at the University of Ottawa may be taken with the approval of the School of Information Studies Graduate Director and the other program concerned.

Duration of the Program
Students in the Graduate Diploma in Information Studies must meet all the diploma requirements within three years of initial enrollment in the program.
Minimum Standards
The minimum passing grade in all courses taken as part of the Information Studies programs is C+. Students who incur failures in two courses (equivalent to six units) must withdraw from the program.

ISI 5301 Foundations of Information Professions
Critical examination of roles, values, ethics, and policies associated with the creation, communication, and use of information in today's society.
ISI 5302 Knowledge Organization
Theories, principles, and models underlying the organization of knowledge and the representation of information resources.
ISI 5303 Information Resource Management
Concepts and practices related to the management of information resources evaluation, selection, acquisition, storage, conservation, and preservation.
ISI 5305 Management Foundations for the Information Professional
Core management theories, principles, and methods used to effectively plan, deliver, and control the provision of information services.
ISI 6313 Government Information Policy and Practice
Exploration of the role of government policy in the provision of information services, in its social, economic, and technological dimensions.
ISI 6321 Information Governance and Innovative Technologies
Principles and challenges of evaluating, organizing, and providing access to information as a core asset of an organization.
ISI 6331 Concept Analysis and Representation
Critical examination of theories, principles, and practices relating to the analysis of concepts reflected in information resources, and the representation of those concepts by means of indexing terms and class notation.
ISI 6332 Metadata
Critical examination of the development and application of metadata standards and taxonomies designed to support resource discovery, resource management, and resource use in different organizational contexts.
ISI 6341 Information Representation and Retrieval Technologies
Survey of digital technologies for representing and retrieving information.
ISI 6343 Technologies for the Management of Digital Assets
Exploration of the technologies underlying the storage, retrieval, and metadata for digital assets, such as text documents, data sets, images, video, and audio recordings.
