Master of Computer Science Program

The Master of Computer Science (MCS) program is offered by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa and the School of Computer Science at Carleton University under the auspices of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Computer Science (OCICS).


Program Description

The program allows students to pursue studies in computer science leading to the degree of Master of Computer Science (MCS) or Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science (PhD). The Institute is responsible for supervising these programs and for providing a framework for interaction between the universities in graduate computer science education.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, candidates must:


  • Have a bachelor of science degree with honours in computer science (or equivalent), with a minimum average of B (70%).
  • Identify at least one professor who is willing to supervise their research and thesis.
  • Meet the language requirements (English or French).

Language Requirements

Applicants must be able to understand and fluently speak the language of instruction (French or English) in the program to which they are applying. Proof of linguistic proficiency may be required.

  • The Master's with Thesis requires 9 course units in computer science at the graduate level, including 3 course units in Software Engineering, 3 course units in the Theory of Computing, and 3 course units in Computer Applications or Computer Systems.
  • The Master's with Coursework and Project requires 30 course units, including 9 course units in computer science at the graduate level and 15 elective course units in computer science at the graduate level.
