Microprogram Urban Studies

The Microprogram Urban Studies is a 9-course unit program that allows students to explore the urban landscape, deepen their understanding of cities, and acquire tools for analyzing and thinking critically about cities and their role in our lives.

Overview

Cities are the quintessential landscapes of human activity, acting as centres of government, learning, economic activity, social interaction, and often as spaces in which new ideas and radical societal changes are first conceived. With more than half of humanity living in a city, and Canada being at the extreme end of the urbanization spectrum with 83% living in urban areas, the question arises as to whether this degree of urbanization is sustainable. The program delves into questions such as how housing, transportation, and community development shape the social and cultural fabric of a city, how cities influence the lives we lead, and what lessons can be learned from cities abroad.

The program consists of compulsory and optional courses.
