The proposed project aims to create e-learning resources in Brightspace to update the medical school curriculum, specifically focusing on the Pathology Curriculum. The primary objective is to ensure that students understand the roles and responsibilities of a pathologist in communicating with the laboratory, patients, and healthcare team members.

Program Objectives

The program seeks to achieve the following objectives:

• Describe the roles the pathologist plays in communicating among the laboratory, patients, and members of the healthcare team.
• Distinguish cytology specimens from core needle biopsies and from excisions, and describe the circumstances in which each is appropriate.
• Discuss the different types of information obtained from each type of specimen.
• Describe how a pathologist uses fresh, fixed, and frozen tissue for histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and genetic testing to arrive at a diagnosis, provide prognostic information, and direct specific therapy.
• Explain the use of frozen sections and how the pathologist works with the patient care team to optimize and prioritize diagnosis and patient management.
• Describe the components of a surgical pathology report, emphasizing how reports are structured to ensure clear communication of diagnostic information to the ordering physician.

Program Content

The e-learning resource will include:

• Images, either photographs or drawings made on a computer.
• Narrative content.
• Videos with scanned digital images, if time and capabilities of Brightspace allow.

Program Development

A resident interested in education will be recruited to help develop the e-learning resource. The project will focus on creating a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for students, utilizing various media formats to convey complex information in an accessible manner.
