Program Details
Description of the JurisMentor Program
The JurisMentor program is a mentorship program offered by the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. The program pairs law students with lawyers and members of the legal community. It provides participants with the opportunity to exchange ideas with a mentor who has similar legal and non-legal interests.
Program Structure
Once participants have completed mandatory training, they will have access to a database of mentor profiles. From this database, they can select a mentor who interests them and communicate directly with them. It is possible to be paired with more than one mentor during the academic year.
Purpose of the Mentorship Program
Mentors serve as role models for students and provide information on a range of topics, such as the dynamics of certain areas of law practice, bar admission, and clerkship internships. Often, students want to know about the realities of daily law practice. The mentorship program allows lawyers to create connections with future members of the Bar and make a valuable contribution to the professional development of students.
Expectations of Mentors and Students
The program is relatively informal, with meetings taking place at locations, times, and frequencies chosen by the mentor and mentee. For example, contact can be made through a coffee or meal, by inviting the student to observe at court, or simply by being available to answer the student's questions. The commitment and period of mentorship can vary due to the episodic nature of the program, but it is generally short-term.
