Program Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is a holistic program that encompasses the design, development, analysis, and use of computer-based information systems. It is one of the few programs that approach information systems from a comprehensive perspective, including social and political elements of building and maintaining complex, large-scale systems.


Why Study Information Systems?

The information systems Ph.D. program builds on an understanding of the design, development, analysis, and use of computer-based information systems and takes research skills to the next level. UMBCs faculty lead research in AI and machine learning, data science, health informatics, human-computer interactions, and software engineering, practicing an interdisciplinary and applied approach.

  1. Review Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems Requirements: GRE scores are optional. The IS department is multi-disciplinary with faculty of varied research interests. While the GRE is not required, it is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their capabilities.
