Program Overview
The TESOL Post-Baccalaureate Certificate is a 4-course program that provides students with a framework in educational linguistics, language acquisition, ESL/EFL methods, assessment, cross-cultural studies, and curriculum development. This certification opens doors to opportunities locally and abroad, from early childhood education to adult learners.

Career Options
The TESOL PBC is designed to provide career options in various contexts, including early childhood education to adult learners. Please note that this is not an initial P-12 certification program. The PBC does not require an internship, but students who need a documented field experience may complete a zero-credit practicum through the UMBC Career Center. All courses taken for the certificate can be applied to the M.A. TESOL upon admission to the masters program.
Tuition, Scholarships, and Financial Aid
UMBC participates in all federal and state student financial aid programs and offers scholarships and assistantships through the Graduate School, Graduate Departments, and the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
Application Requirements
- Review Program Requirements:
- Bachelors degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Letters of recommendation (two for the TESOL PBC)
- Statement of purpose explaining interest in the field
- Second language speakers of English must submit one of the following scores:
- 213+ on the computer-based TOEFL
- 80+ on the internet-based test TOEFL
- 6.5+ on IELTS
- 53+ on PTE Academic
- Start Graduate Admissions Application: Application decisions can take 6-8 weeks after the programs deadline.
