Program Overview

Computer Engineering Bachelor's Degree

Computer engineering is a growing field that integrates both the software and hardware sides of computer systems. A bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Michigan Tech prepares students to become uniquely qualified experts in both electrical engineering and computer science.

Program Overview

The program bridges the gap between electrical engineering and computer science, setting students up for a wide range of in-demand careers. Students study the whole computer system by taking courses in computer system engineering, programming, mechanics, computer architecture, and more. This prepares them for a career in any computer-related field, such as robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and more.

Curriculum

As a computer engineering major at Michigan Tech, students build on a foundation of physics, mathematics, and engineering principles. They develop hands-on expertise working on real hardware and software projects. Students can put their computer engineering skills to the test in either an industry-sponsored Senior Design capstone project or collaborative Enterprise team. The program also offers advanced coursework in areas such as:

  • Computer Networks
  • Internet of Things Applications and Design
  • Network Security
  • Software Processes and Management
  • User Interface Design and Implementation
  • Autonomous Systems

Engineering Enterprise Concentration

Students can pursue an Enterprise concentration by taking part in Michigan Tech's award-winning Enterprise Program. This involves working on real projects, with real clients, in an environment thats more like a business than a classroom. Students can choose from more than 25 Enterprise teams on campus to invent products, provide services, and pioneer solutions.

Career Opportunities

Graduates with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Michigan Tech can work in numerous fields. Some potential career paths include:

  • Hardware Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • Validation Engineer
  • Embedded Software Engineer
  • Systems Engineer
  • Firmware Engineer The mean entry-level salary for computer engineers is $76,707, according to figures from Payscale.

What is Computer Engineering?

Computer engineers study the computer system in its entirety, working with both hardware and software. They understand how the hardware and software interact with each other and can test design trade-offs between the two. Computer engineers bridge the hardware/software divide, designing, building, and programming complete computer systems from scratch.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech prepares students to tackle tomorrows challenges in robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, alternative energy, and beyond. The department offers a customizable approach to studying and developing crucial technologies to meet societys needs.

Accreditation

The Computer Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Electrical, Computer, Communications, Telecommunication(s) and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

Research and Facilities

Students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, including the Plexus Innovation Lab and electronics makerspace. They can participate in undergraduate research with world-renowned faculty and work on industry-sponsored Senior Design capstone projects.

College of Engineering

Michigan Techs College of Engineering is committed to inspiring students, advancing knowledge, and innovating technological solutions to create a sustainable, just, and prosperous world. With an entering engineering class of about 1,000 students, 15+ degrees to choose from, and 160+ engineering faculty, students take part in a world-class education with the trusted reputation of Michigan Tech.
