Program Overview


Master in Statistics for Data Science

The Master in Statistics for Data Science is a one-year intensive program that provides thorough and intensive training in the statistical toolbox behind Data Science. The program aims to create self-sufficient data scientists able to tackle any modeling task by applying, modifying/developing, and deploying new data analysis techniques.

Program Description

The Master in Statistics for Data Science focuses on providing a deep understanding of fundamental statistical methods through a combination of methodological exposition, computational implementation, and application of methods. The program is designed to create professionals who can apply, modify, and develop new data analysis techniques.


Curriculum

The program is comprised of 39 ECTS of compulsory subjects, 15 ECTS of electives, and a Master's Thesis of 6 ECTS. The curriculum offers two pathways: methodological and applied. The methodological pathway places more emphasis on advanced statistical methods for data science, while the applied pathway is adequate for those more interested in applications, consulting, and high-performance computing.


Year 1 - Semester 1

The first semester includes the following subjects:

  • Programming in R (3 ECTS)
  • Optimization and Decision Analytics (3 ECTS)

  • Advanced Programming (3 ECTS)
  • Nonparametric Statistics (3 ECTS)

Year 1 - Semester 2

The second semester includes the following subjects:


  • Perspectives on Statistics (3 ECTS)
  • Bayesian Inference (3 ECTS)
  • Statistical Learning (3 ECTS) And two elective subjects chosen from:
  • Simulation and Resampling (3 ECTS)
  • Time Series Analysis (3 ECTS)
  • Data Tidying and Reporting (3 ECTS)
  • High Performance Computing for Data Science (3 ECTS) And three elective subjects chosen from:
  • Advanced Regression and Prediction (3 ECTS)
  • Biostatistics (3 ECTS)
  • Network Analysis (3 ECTS)
  • Graphical and Hidden Markov Models (3 ECTS)

Master's Thesis

The Master's Thesis is a 6 ECTS project that students must complete at the end of the program.


Admission

To be admitted to the program, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Hold a previous university qualification (at least Bachelor's degree or equivalent)
  • Qualifications with preferential access are in the areas of Statistics, Mathematical sciences, Physical sciences, Informatics engineering, Industrial engineering, and Telecommunications engineering
  • Demonstrate sufficient levels of knowledge in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science

Admission Criteria

The student selection will be based on:


  • Academic record of studies access (50%)
  • Professional experience (10%)
  • Qualifications obtained in essential subjects (20%)
  • Motivation letter and recommendation letters (10%)
  • Others: awards, portfolio of works (10%)

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the program are:


  • EU students: 4,800 (80/ECTS) for the first academic year (60 ECTS)
  • Non-EU students: 7,200 (120/ECTS) for the first academic year (60 ECTS)
  • Reservation fee: 450 (paid once the student receives notification of admission and deducted from the first tuition payment)

Scholarships

The program offers a specific program of grants to boost and promote excellence in academic performance. The grants include:


  • 3 grants of 1,500 to cover the net tuition fees for students admitted to the Master's program
  • Excellence Awards: 6 awards with a total amount of more than 8,000, to be awarded at the end of the academic course to students with the most outstanding academic records.

Excellence Awards

The Excellence Awards are given to students with the most outstanding academic records. The awards are as follows:


  1. First award: 1 award, 2,500, for the student with the most outstanding academic record and an average grade greater than or equal to 9.00.
  2. Second awards: 2 awards, 1,500, for students with one of the three most outstanding academic records and an average grade greater than or equal to 8.50.
  3. Third awards: 3 awards, 900, for students with one of the six most outstanding academic records and an average grade greater than or equal to 8.00.
