Introduction to the Psychiatry Residency Program
The Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Montreal is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive education in the field of psychiatry. Program Overview
The program is five years in length and is divided into two main components: junior and senior residency. The junior residency (R1-R2) focuses on the development of foundational skills in psychiatry, while the senior residency (R3-R5) provides advanced training in specialized areas of psychiatry.
Junior Residency (R1-R2)
During the junior residency, residents participate in a variety of rotations, including:
- 10 periods of core medicine
- 2 periods of family medicine in a regional setting

- 2 periods of neurology (ideally one in neuroradiology)
- 1 period of night shift
- 3 periods of elective rotations (research, pediatrics, geriatrics, palliative care, endocrinology, pain clinic, etc.)
- 3 periods of psychiatry interface (psychiatric emergency, collaborative care, consultation-liaison)
Senior Residency (R3-R5)
During the senior residency, residents participate in a variety of rotations, including:
- 6-7 periods of child and adolescent psychiatry
- 6-7 periods of geriatric psychiatry
- 3-6 periods of rehabilitation
- 3-6 periods of consultation-liaison
- 2-4 periods of addiction psychiatry
- 1-3 periods of collaborative care
- 13 periods of elective rotations

The program requires residents to complete a variety of evaluations and assessments, including:

Research and Scholarship
