Introduction to the Technical Production and Management Major
The Technical Production and Management Major at Temple University's School of Theater, Film and Media Arts offers students the opportunity to develop the creative and practical skills needed to manage technical areas of theatrical production. This program prepares students for a career in theater production management, stage management, and technical production.
Program Overview
Through the curriculum, students gain insight into several areas relevant to theater, including production management, stage management, technical direction, and various design disciplines. The Technical Production and Management BFA caps at 12 students per year, which assures the availability of real-world production work for students during Temple's theater season. Students gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to pursue a career or master's degree after graduation.
Classes and Curriculum
The Technical Production and Management Major is a 123-credit program that can be completed in four years. Courses offered in this program include:
- Design Drafting
- Introduction to Design
- Lighting, Sound, and Video Technology
- Production Practicum
- Stage Management
- Structural Design for the Stage
- Technical Direction for the Theater
- Theater Management
- Theater Safety and Management
- The Job Market All students complete the Senior Capstone Project and Theater Internship courses for real-world experience in theater management.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level, course load, in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. The tuition costs for the 2025-2026 academic year are:
- Pennsylvania resident: $21,360.00 per year
- Out-of-state: $37,032.00 per year
Academic Advising
The Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts has a centralized advising office with five staff members. Advisors help students navigate the undergraduate curriculum for each degree program.
Student Clubs and Organizations
Student clubs and organizations give students the opportunity to gain stage performance or production experience, express themselves without classroom restrictions, and network with other theater professionals. Some of the clubs include:
- Alpha Psi Omega, a nationally recognized honorary theater fraternity
- Babel Poetry Collective, a group comprised of MCs, musicians, and singers
- The Musical Theater Cooperative, which provides students with opportunities such as masterclasses and trips to New York City
- Temple SMASH, Temple University's first and only televised variety show
- Temple Theaters' Sidestage Season, a group that facilitates Theater students' professional growth
Study Away Programs
Students can spend a semester in London studying theater as part of the London Study Away Program or in Los Angeles studying the film industry as part of the Los Angeles Study Away Program. These programs provide students with the opportunity to broaden their education and gain international experience.
Accreditation
The Theater Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a member of the University Resident Theatre Association.
