Introduction to the Speech, Language and Hearing Science Major
The Bachelor of Arts in Speech, Language and Hearing Science at Temple University's Christopher M. Barnett College of Public Health is a degree program designed for students interested in becoming speech-language pathologists or audiologists. This program equips graduates with the skills to assess and treat speech, language, and/or hearing challenges in individuals with various conditions, including developmental delays and disorders, as well as acquired disorders.
Program Overview
As a student in this degree program, you will learn about:
- The sciences of speech, language, and hearing
- Typical language development, as well as delayed and disordered development
- Types of acquired speech, language, and hearing disorders
- Methods for preventing, assessing, and treating these disorders
Upon graduation, you will be prepared to pursue advanced study in speech-language pathology or audiology, satisfying the requirements of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Alternatively, you will have a foundation for graduate work in special education, early childhood education, teaching of English as a second language, and foreign language education, among other health- and education-related professions.

Program Format
In addition to the 39 required credits in the department, students take courses in:

Transfer Students
Students entering the program in their junior year can complete the major in two academic years if they have already completed the required GenEd courses. Transfer students who have completed equivalents of the required courses can take electives inside or outside the major.
