General Program Requirements

- Required Courses:
- Coursework, including at least one advanced-level (8000 to 9000-level) seminar: 27 credits
- ENG 5292: Writing the M.A. Qualifying Paper and Writing for Publication: 3 credits

Language Requirement
- Students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of one foreign language.

Culminating Events
- Qualifying Paper:
- Students must write a qualifying paper that demonstrates their ability to write clearly and analytically on a literary subject.
- The qualifying paper (6,000-8,000 words) is typically a substantial revision of a paper submitted for a previous course.
- It is to be submitted in the last term of coursework.
- Students work with a Graduate Faculty sponsor who must approve it for submission to the Graduate Director.
- The paper must then be approved by the MA Qualifying Paper Committee, which may accept the essay or ask for revisions.
- PhD students can obtain their MA along the way either by completing ENG 5292 or passing the Comprehensive Exams required for the PhD.
