Program Overview
Overview of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
The Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) at Temple University focuses on the understanding of fundamental scientific principles and the application of these principles to solving complex problems using computing technology. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science provides an in-depth study of the science of computing, including mathematical/theoretical foundations as well as systems and application software development.
Program Requirements
To graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, students must complete the following requirements:
- University Requirements (123 total credit hours)
- College Requirements (a minimum of 90 total credits within the College of Science & Technology, the College of Liberal Arts, and/or the College of Engineering)
- Major Requirements for Bachelor of Science (73-74 credit hours)
University Requirements
Students must complete all University requirements, including:
- General Education (GenEd) requirements
- Writing-intensive courses (at least two, totaling at least six credits)
- Residency requirements
College Requirements
Students must complete:
- A minimum of 90 total credits within the College of Science & Technology, the College of Liberal Arts, and/or the College of Engineering
- A minimum of 45 of these credits must be upper-level (courses numbered 2000 and above)
- A one-credit first-year or transfer seminar
Major Requirements
The major requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science include:
- Computer & Information Science courses (at least 9 courses required for the major must be completed at Temple, with at least 7 CIS courses completed at Temple)
- Computer Science Electives (15-16 credits)
- Mathematics courses (Calculus I and II)
- Laboratory Science courses (two laboratory science courses, with options in Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, and Physics)

Distinction in Major
To graduate with distinction in the Computer Science major, a student must satisfy the following criteria:
- Have a minimum 3.50 major GPA
- Have a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA
