Program Overview
Introduction to the Art Therapy Major
The Bachelor of Arts in Art Therapy at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture is a 120-credit hour program that prepares students for graduate-level studies in art therapy and related fields. This program emphasizes intersectional and transdisciplinary study, enabling students to develop a broad range of skills needed to succeed in careers involving therapeutic art.
Program Description
The Art Therapy BA program takes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating studio art classes and psychology courses with fieldwork in Philadelphia communities, self-reflective art making, and research. Students learn about the history, theories, philosophies, and practices of art therapy and engage in fieldwork placements that amplify coursework and build confidence in working with people.
Classes and Curriculum
The program follows the Foundations core curriculum, focusing on 2D and 3D studio art practices, art history, and critical writing and discourse. In their second and third years, students refine their skills in disciplines such as painting, ceramics, and photography, as well as learn about community arts practices, art education, and advanced psychology. In their senior year, Art Therapy majors focus on fieldwork and electives across the university. Some of the courses students can expect to take include:

Minors and Related Graduate Degrees
The program offers a minor in Art History. Related graduate degrees include the Master of Education in Art Education. Additionally, there are related graduate certificates in Teaching in Art Education and Teaching in Higher Education.
