Introduction to the Instructional Learning Technology Graduate Certificate

The Instructional Learning Technology Graduate Certificate program, offered by the College of Education and Human Development, is designed to equip students with the necessary qualifications to become technology leaders in their schools. This program enables students to adapt technology to improve learning outcomes and features the option of earning Pennsylvania Department of Education certification as an Instructional Technology Specialist.

Program Overview

The Instructional Learning Technology Graduate Certificate program can be completed in one or two years, depending on whether students take classes full- or part-time. Courses are available in the fall, spring, and summer sessions. This certificate is valuable for teachers working in early childhood, middle grades, secondary, or special education, as it strengthens professional competencies and can fulfill the state's continuing education requirements. Additionally, it is beneficial for those who educate or train adults in corporate, government, or higher education settings.

Credit Requirements

• The credit requirements vary based on whether students seek to earn the graduate certificate in instructional learning technology or get state certification as an instructional technology specialist.
  • Instructional Learning Technology Certificate: Complete 12 credits (three core courses plus one elective).
  • Instructional Technology Specialist Certification: Complete 15 credits, which include a practicum course that provides 100 hours of hands-on experience.

Curriculum

To earn this certificate, students must complete four courses and one elective. The elective allows students to focus their interest on PreK through grade 12 students or on college-age youth and adult learners. State certification as an instructional technology specialist can be obtained by completing the ILT: Practicum in Instructional Technology course, which includes a minimum of 100 hours of participation in sequential field experiences/practicum. Additional coursework in Special Education and English Language Learning may be required to meet guidelines for all certifications.

Delivery Method

All but one course is delivered online. For students pursuing Instructional Technology Specialist Certification, firsthand knowledge is gained in classrooms through immersive field placements and student teaching experiences as part of the academic program.

The Certificate Program offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support. Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level, course load, and in-state or out-of-state residency.

Certification

This program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as leading to Instructional Technology Specialist Certification (preK through grade 12).
