Introduction to the Master of Science in Communication for Development and Social Change

The Master of Science in Communication for Development and Social Change (CDSC) is a 30-credit program designed to be completed in one year. It is tailored for communication professionals passionate about utilizing media, communication, and digital platforms as tools for transformative social change.


About the Program

The CDSC MS program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to effect meaningful change in their communities in areas such as climate adaptation, public health, sustainable agriculture, gender equity, and peace and security. The program covers strategic communication and public campaign design, emphasizing the key roles that empowered communities, local voices, and participatory strategies play in social change processes.

  • Time Limit for Degree Completion: 4 years, although the program is designed to be completed in one year.
  • Campus Location: Main.
  • Full-Time/Part-Time Status: While the degree program can be completed on a full- or part-time basis, full-time enrollment is strongly encouraged.
  • Interdisciplinary Study: The program is designed to be interdisciplinary, consistent with the highly interdisciplinary field of communication for development and social change.

Job Prospects

This program prepares graduates to be communication specialists who prioritize societal impact. Graduates learn to craft persuasive campaign messages, raise public awareness about specific social issues, build consensus, and generate change by effectively using the range of communication alternatives available.


Admission Requirements

  • Application Deadline: February 15 for the Fall term.
  • Letters of Reference: 2 letters are required from evaluators who can provide insight into the applicant's potential for professional achievement and aptitude for graduate study.
  • Bachelor's Degree: All applicants must present credentials that are the equivalent of the baccalaureate degree at Temple University.
  • Statement of Goals: A 1,000-word essay about interests and experiences in the field of Communication for Development and Social Change.
  • Standardized Test Scores: GRE scores are optional, but if provided, scores at or above the 65th percentile are expected. Applicants from non-English speaking countries must report scores for a standardized test of English (TOEFL iBT: 105, IELTS Academic: 7.0).
  • Resume and Writing Sample: A current resume or curriculum vitae and a writing sample are required.
