Interventional Radiology Residency Program
The Interventional Radiology department at Temple University offers a five-year ACGME accredited integrated IR/DR radiology residency. Two IR/DR residents are accepted per year. After completing a 1-year preliminary or transitional internship year, residents will complete 3 years in diagnostic radiology alongside their diagnostic radiology resident peers, followed by dedicated 2 years in interventional radiology, to become board eligible for the IR/DR certificate.
Program Description
The program provides a comprehensive training experience that encompasses diagnostic and interventional radiology with a focus on providing superior clinical patient care in an academic tertiary and quaternary care setting. The interventional radiology department performs a full spectrum of procedures that residents will train in. Over 12,000 IR procedures are performed each year across Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Hands-on training is paramount to success, and residents easily surpass the minimum number of common and complex procedures required to be well-prepared for the demands of being an IR attending.
Rotations
Residents spend time in various rotations, including:
- 1 month in the busy Temple surgical intensive care unit to gain additional training in the care and management of critically ill patients
- 1 month in specialty training on noninvasive peripheral vascular lab interpretation
- 1 month at the prestigious Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) to gain exposure to pediatric interventional radiology
- 1 month at Atlantic Medical Imaging to gain experience working in an outpatient-based lab performing procedures including complex peripheral arterial disease cases
- 1 month with neurosurgical colleagues to gain experience with neurointerventional procedures and management
Program Aims
The aims of the integrated interventional radiology residency program at Temple University Hospital are:
- To provide residents with a supportive educational environment rooted in the practice of evidence-based medicine, to develop a thorough understanding of the clinical diagnosis and care of patients with diseases commonly treated with interventional radiology procedures.
- To enable residents to develop expertise in the imaging techniques and interpretation skills needed for procedure planning, execution, and patient follow-up and achieve competency in performing common and advanced interventional radiology procedures such that they may practice autonomously and confidently upon graduation.
- To provide residents with opportunities for research, teaching, and mentoring that will prepare them for and enable them to excel in academic practice, if they should choose that path upon graduation.
