• Description: This course explores the contemporary foundations of the mafia from a sociological and social science perspective, tracing its roots from the unification of Italy to the present day. The course examines the impact of the mafia on Italian cities, institutional safeguards, and responses to mafia-related crimes.

Program Details

The program includes a visit to Sicily, with a stay in Palermo, where students can see the results of mafia influence in the city. Students will also be introduced to anti-mafia activists in both urban and rural contexts. The course covers various topics, including:

• The impact of the mafia on Italian cities and the environment
• Institutional responses to mafia-related crimes
• Contemporary issues, such as ecomafia, prostitution, drugs, finance, and human trafficking
