Program Overview

Bachelor of Biomedicine

The Bachelor of Biomedicine offers a transformative journey through the biomedical science of life, disease, and health systems. This course is designed to build understanding of the human body in its full complexity, preparing students for the challenges of modern healthcare.

Overview

  • Expand horizons and explore the foundations of health and the human body, from molecules to diseases and population health
  • Learn from leading experts and get hands-on experience in a world-class biomedical precinct
  • Prepare for a wide range of rewarding careers in health and biomedical research

The integrated curriculum is designed to apply concepts across biomedical science disciplines, from molecules to malady and from individual diseases to population health. Drawing on the latest evidence and cutting-edge discoveries, students develop crucial analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills, alongside a robust understanding of biomedical science.

Is the Bachelor of Biomedicine for You?

This course is designed for those eager to understand the core principles of biomedical science and how they apply to real-world health challenges. It is ideal for individuals curious about the next generation of treatments that could improve community health and fascinated by the science behind how we live, grow, and face health challenges.

Why Study the Bachelor of Biomedicine?

The Bachelor of Biomedicine offers a unique and comprehensive learning experience that prepares students for diverse and impactful careers. Key features include:

  • Core subjects available only to Biomedicine students, providing a strong foundation across biomedical science disciplines
  • The opportunity to choose from 16 majors, allowing students to deepen their understanding in an area of interest
  • A vibrant community through the Biomedicine Student's Society (BSS), which offers academic and social programs tailored to students' shared journey

Course Structure

The course is structured over three years, with core subjects in each year designed to build a strong foundation in biomedical science and enhance understanding of the human body. In the third year, core subjects take on either a clinical focus (Molecule to Malady) or a population health focus (Frontiers in Biomedicine).

Career Outcomes

The Bachelor of Biomedicine is an excellent springboard for a variety of career paths and further study. Many graduates go on to study the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, while others choose graduate courses in dentistry, optometry, physiotherapy, biomedical research, public health, or nursing. Some students combine their degree with graduate studies in law, commerce, or management.

Entry Requirements

  • Guaranteed ATAR: 93.00 (2026)
  • Lowest selection rank: 91.00 (2025, guide only)

The Melbourne Biomedical Precinct

The School of Biomedical Sciences is surrounded by more than 40 hospitals, research institutions, teaching facilities, and biotechnology organisations, making it an incredibly sought-after hub for global biomedical leaders.

The Benefit of Breadth

One of the great advantages of this degree is the opportunity to dedicate up to a quarter of studies to areas beyond the sciences, through 'breadth' subjects. This exposure to different ways of thinking, various interests, and a wider range of career paths is incredibly enriching. Popular breadth subjects among Bachelor of Biomedicine students include:

  • Our Planet, Our Health
  • Drugs That Shape Society
  • Drawing With Anatomy
  • Positive Leadership and Careers
  • Foundations of Information Systems
  • Privacy Law and Social Networks
  • AUSLAN and Visual Communication
  • Health From a Different Perspective

With some additional study, students can even pursue a concurrent diploma alongside their Biomedicine degree, adding another layer to their unique skillset.
