Program Overview

Clinical Optometry (MSc)

Overview

The Clinical Optometry (MSc) program is designed to meet the continuing education and training needs of modern eye care professionals, providing advanced knowledge and facilitating understanding in this rapidly expanding field of healthcare. The program aims to equip optometrists with the skills and knowledge necessary to advance their careers and contribute to the development of optometric practice.

Duration and Mode

  • Duration: 5 years
  • Mode: Part-time blended learning

Course Structure

The program allows students to study up to 120 credits of taught modules from a selection of postgraduate modules available from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences. To complete a Master's in Clinical Optometry, students must study 'Study and Research Skills' plus a research project module (60 credits), which commences in September of each academic year.

Admissions Criteria

To be considered for the program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • If registered with the GOC, provide evidence of full GOC registration and a personal statement outlining intended modules and start date.
  • If not registered with the GOC, provide a copy of the certificate and transcripts showing an honors degree in Optometry or a professional optometric qualification, a copy of the IELTS certificate, and a written professional reference.
  • Submit a 500-word personal statement including a summary of academic background, clinical experience, and proficiency in key clinical skills.

Application Deadline and Selection Process

  • Applications are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and it is recommended to apply as early as possible.
  • Applications normally close at the end of August for the part-time program and at the end of April for the full-time program.
  • Interviews may be held with non-UK optometrists to ensure they have the relevant clinical skills required for the course.

Learning and Assessment

  • Modules may differ, but students can expect to be taught online via lectures, Xerte tutorials, and webinars, and by attending workshops for some clinical modules.
  • Assessment incorporates a variety of modes, including assignments, presentations, discussions, case scenarios, and practical examinations.
  • Feedback will be provided on all assessments, and students will have access to a range of support services, including a student counseling service and academic mentoring.

Tuition Fees

  • Tuition fees depend on fee status, which could be home, island, or overseas.
  • The course is charged on a per-module basis, and more information can be found on the university's tuition fees pages.

Additional Costs

  • Students will be required to pay for travel, subsistence, and accommodation for specific contact days.
  • All equipment will be provided, but students should consider living costs in Cardiff.

Funding

  • Postgraduate loans may be available for students starting their master's degree in September 2026 or later.
  • An alumni discount is available for Cardiff University graduates planning to start an eligible master's in 2026/27.

Career Prospects

  • The course will enable optometrists to advance their careers and may act as assurance that practitioners are competent to work in specialist clinics.
  • Please note that this Master's degree does not lead to full professional registration with the General Optical Council (GOC), and it does not qualify students to practice in the UK.

School of Optometry and Vision Sciences

  • The school offers hands-on experience, outstanding optometry facilities, and involvement from internationally renowned staff.
  • Facilities and equipment are available for students, along with research opportunities and academic staff support.
