Course Content

This module introduces students to a range of finds from archaeological sites, considering how to investigate, analyze, and question these finds to discover more about past societies. The course covers:

• Environmental evidence
• Animal and human bones
• Man-made objects, such as pottery, metal- and glass-work, and coins
• Archaeological conservation
• Preservation and presentation of finds for current and future generations
• Development of community archaeology projects

Learning and Teaching

The course consists of nine units divided into themes, each comprising a two-hour face-to-face session. These sessions include lectures, class discussions, group work, source analysis activities, and exercises to develop academic skills. Additionally, there will be opportunities for learning outside the classroom through the University's virtual learning environment.

Coursework and Assessment

The course has two short pieces of assessed work, totaling around 1,500 words, designed to help students develop the skills and approaches needed to study the past successfully. The assessments include:

• An object biography based on an object found at an archaeological excavation
• A 'digital museum' project, an illustrated essay presenting a short exhibition of 5-6 objects that tell the story of an aspect of past society
