Program Overview


Occupational Therapy (MSc)

The MSc Occupational Therapy programme is designed for practicing occupational therapists who wish to develop their knowledge and essential skills to progress their career. This course aims to provide a sound grounding in the theory and occupation-focused practice of occupational therapy, while also building on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This programme offers the opportunity to learn alongside a diverse group of students at various points in their careers, sharing knowledge and gaining understanding of occupational therapy practice worldwide. Students will benefit from academic support, including a designated personal tutor throughout their studies. The programme is taught by experienced educational and clinical staff with considerable local, national, and international reputations.


Admissions Criteria

To be considered for this programme, applicants must meet the following entry requirements:


  • A 2:2 honours degree in Occupational Therapy (with or without post-registration clinical experience), or an equivalent international degree.
  • A copy of the degree certificate and transcripts.
  • A personal statement addressing specific points, including why the programme was selected, relevant experience, and career plans.
  • English language requirements: IELTS certificate with an overall score of 6.5 and 5.5 in all subskills.

Course Structure

The MSc Occupational Therapy programme is modular, consisting of 120 credits in the taught component and a further 60 credits in the dissertation component.


  • Core modules (90 credits) include:
    • Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy Theory and Application
    • The Art & Science of Occupational Therapy
    • Research methods and data analysis in healthcare
  • Optional modules (30 credits) include:
    • Evidencing Learning in Specialist Professional Practice
    • Facilitating Learning and Teaching
    • Leadership in Health and Social Care
    • Patient Safety and Clinical Risk
  • In Year Two, students complete their dissertation from a choice of three options (60 credits):
    • Empirical Dissertation
    • Dissertation M Level: Work-based Project
    • Dissertation M Level: Systematic Review of the Literature

Learning and Assessment

Teaching methods include discussions, lecturer-led sessions, student-led seminars, presentations, and individual tutorials. Self-directed study is also an essential part of the course. Assessment is through written assignments and oral presentations, demonstrating the ability to analyse and evaluate situations and present ideas clearly.


Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for 2026 entry depend on fee status:


  • Home status: Ł9,950 for Year one, with no deposit required.
  • Overseas status: Ł24,700 for Year one, with a Ł2,500 deposit.

Financial support may be available, including Master's Scholarships, postgraduate loans, and an Alumni Discount for Cardiff University graduates.
